Our Modal Fabric

If you haven’t heard about modal yet, here’s the short version – its a lightweight, stretchy, and breathable fabric that’s made from beech tree pulp.  It’s an eco-conscious, durable option for clothing and there are a ton of reasons to love it.

For starters, it is a naturally stretchy fabric that is soft, breathable and durable. It has a silk-like texture and is often used as a high-quality vegan alternative to silk.

Amongst other things, it’s loved for its drape, colour fastness and natural wrinkle resistance. It’s also naturally anti-bacterial and resists pilling for a long time. Need we go on?

Modal was originally developed in Japan in the 1950s. Today, most modal is produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG, which has the trademark for the fabric. We source our modal yarn directly from Austria to ensure authenticity and quality.

What makes it better for the planet?

Modal is generally considered a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton because beech trees don’t require much water to grow and therefore the production process uses about 10-20 times less water than cotton. Also, being a plant based product, it is 100% biodegradable as opposed to polyester which is a plastic based fibre.

Why do we love it?

Modal is the perfect blend of luxury and practicality. It’s easy to care for and durable, while being silky soft and delicate at the same time. In fact, we liked it so much we even blended some with our Pima cotton to make a ‘best of both’. Read more about our cotton modal fabric here.
